New! CPD AS and A Level Sociology Autumn 21014

Meeting the demands of the new AS/A Level Sociology Specification (AQA)

The biggest change to AS and A level Sociology in fifteen years starts in September 2015. This day will help teachers of the subject prepare themselves for teaching the new AQA Sociology specifications.

KEITH TROBE is a hugely experienced teacher, writer and examiner of AS and A level Sociology. A former Principal Examiner and co-author of the main textbooks used in schools and colleges, Keith will use his experience to analyse the content and assessment in the new AQA Sociology specification (AQA). Keith is also the author and owner of Lindisfarne Press.

The sessions will be essentially practical and each participant will leave with a pack of materials that can be used with students and colleagues. This will include briefing sheets, worked examples of answers and guides to the new specification.

Dates and venues Summer 2015

Session 1 Changes and Continuities

Whats new and what is the same as the current specification?

Well work carefully through the new specifications identifying changes in content but probably more importantly, changes to assessment. With no modular exams, teachers and students will need to be very well-prepared for their single shot at success.

In particular we will look at what the difference is between the AS and A level standard in Education, Methods and Families and Households.

Session 2 The Apply questions.

The new specification places greater emphasis on the skill of application than previously. Several question types specifically ask students to apply. Keith will carefully explain what this means and how students should answer each type of apply question. There will be formats and worked examples to illustrate this process.

Session 3 The method in context question.

This question currently continues to cause candidates problems and this is likely to continue into the new specification. Keith will offer guidance, formats and examples to help students to maximise marks on this question.

Session 4 Dealing with the change to end-assessed AS/A levels

This is a major concern for teachers and students. Without the safety net of modular re-sits, the pressure is even greater on our students. Many teachers have also only ever taught the subject in a modular setting. We will analyse the ramifications of this change and look at teaching strategies to deal with this major change.

Session 5 Essay writing skills

Keith says writing essays caused students difficulties when I first started teaching and examining over thirty-five years ago, and it continues to be a major headache for teachers. This session will offer some practical ways to help students to improve their essays.

We also offer student seminars as part of a revision programme for AS/A level sociology. Delivered by senior examiners, these are the perfect way to stimulate sociology revision. For any student revising for AS and A levels, these seminars give them a real insight into how what examiners are looking for. We bring these sociology revision seminars directly into schools and colleges. For anyone following the AQA sociology specification, these are an ideal way to start sociology revision.
